PROGRAMME INFORMATION

The beginning of the 17th Century signalled the evolution in Northern Italy of what we now call ‘baroque’ music, introduced by vocal composers such as Monteverdi and Caccini, who referred to the new style as Le Nuove Musiche, or Stile Moderno, a new way of writing music with a simpler structure that expressed musical emotion more directly. It was also the dawn of virtuoso music for a single instrument, such as the violin (accompanied by a bass line), or the harpsichord on its own. Over the alps, Austrian composers such as Biber, Schmelzer and Froberger adopted and adapted this new style.
